Camp Belwood is located on the shores of Lake Belwood, just 10 kilometers outside of Fergus. The site consists of a large lakefront for boating activities and a scenic landscape with several open play areas.

A lakeside campfire circle overlooks the waterfront, which is the centre of our site; from the boating docks campers develop boating skills in our fleet of sailboats, canoes, kayaks and rowboats. Belwood’s solar heated swimming pool is an ideal spot for campers to enjoy recreational swimming and fun pool games.

The Program

Belwood's program, like its site, is unique.  As part of a small and welcoming camping community, Belwood campers experience a more personalized program; with two age groups (Juniors and Seniors) we have two very distinct programs which run independently from one another. These separate programs allow us to provide a comfortable introduction into residential camping to our younger campers, while recognizing the need for a more challenging program for our older campers, experienced or not. All Belwood campers have meals together, and they also gather throughout the week for camp-wide programs.

Junior Program  5-8 yrs        girls with painted faces

Early in the week, the goal of the Junior program is to introduce campers to a variety of Belwood activities.Cabin groups participate in 45 minute activity periods designed both to keep the interest of these younger campers and to expose them to as many different activities as possible. As campers become more aware of what we offer, and the activities that they personally enjoy, they are able to indiviually choose their favourites during the "Junior Selects" time slots later in the week.

Senior Program  9-14 yrs

As the week begins, the senior program offers an overview of Belwood camp skills and activities with the option for campers to start choosing their favourites during "Senior Selects". As the week progresses, the number of "Senior Selects" increases so campers may choose the activities they enjoy most. Senior activity times are an hour and fifteen minutes to allow more detailed learning, and to concentrate on skill development. Campers successfully completing levels receive level achievement cards at the end of the session.

In 2004, YMCA Camp Belwood introduced BMX Biking for our senior campers, and the program was a huge success! Many of our older Belwood campers, fully outfitted in proper gear including helmets, elbow and knee pads, challenged themselves on the diverse terrain and were successful in learning safe biking techniques and often achieving various skill levels. As we anticipate the summer of 2008, we look forward to re-opening the BMX trails!

The Director

We are happy to welcome Alix Hughes as Belwood's director in 2008.  Alix has held a variety of staff positions at Belwood over the past nine years.  As the assistant director for the past two years, and as a ful-time employee at the Outdoor Centre this past fall, Alix continues to work closely with our other directors in preparing for the upcoming camping season.  In addition to Alix's camping experience and training, she has also worked as a grade six teacher with the York Region District School Board.
