Module 1 - Session 1.1
ACCESS TO OCCUPATIONS IN ONTARIO
This session covers general topics on occupations in Canada and
particularly in Ontario. Participants are exposed to the terms and concepts related to
occupations in Canada. They become familiar with the organization of occupations in Canada
as found in the National Occupational Classification or NOC.
They gain understanding of a typical occupational profile, including job description,
education, experiences and training required. The session covers important aspects of some
occupations such as licensing and certification, the licensing bodies in Ontario, sources
of information, time lines, and career planning issues.
General Expectations or Outcomes of this Session
Participants will become familiar with:
 | Accessing occupations in Ontario |
 | Terms and concepts related to occupations |

 | Licensing bodies in Ontario |
 | Timelines and career planning issues |
Specific Expectations from Session 1.1
Participants will:
 | Know how to look up an occupation in the NOC and select occupations that resemble
their previous occupations and/or desired occupations |
 | Know the components of a typical occupational profile (educational requirements,
types of jobs, duties) |
 | Know how to access information on licensing and/or certification |
 | Have exposure to one or more scenarios of career integration (through listening
to a speaker's perspective on his/her profession, education and training, experiences with
certification procedures, timelines and career planning issues) |
Cross-Cultural Notes
 | Link information with the clients' previous or desired occupations |
 | Support participants in expressing different cultural perspectives while learning |
 | Clarify and explain as often as possible, as this section is heavily saturated
with unfamiliar concepts |
 | Pace the delivery and illustrate by using day-to-day metaphors and case studies |
 | Hands-on learning is appreciated by the newcomers. Therefore, have enough
resources such as NOC and Job Futures available for them to use for practice |
 | As a follow-up to NOC, participants may request more information on various
occupations. You may suggest that they access HRDC resources, Internet information and/or
supply them with copies of occupational information, as required |
