GENERAL EMPLOYMENT AND
CAREER ORIENTATION
BEFORE YOU START: CHECKLIST 
Purpose
The General Employment and Career Orientation Module consists of a
series of sessions geared toward improving accessibility to employment information for
newcomers. The sessions are organized in a sequence to allow gradual learning, starting
from very general topics such as labour market trends, to more specific ones, such as
learning opportunities in specific fields.

Objective
To facilitate the gathering of relevant career and labour market
information by newcomers to Canada in a timely, consistent and thorough manner.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to relate acquired information to their own
occupational experience within the context of the career decision-making process.
Measure
Participant is able to develop an individualized portfolio of
information, terminology and requirements of the intended occupation.
Methods
Multi-dimensional, information and orientation group sessions.
Techniques
Guest speakers; lectures; videos; computer presentations;
participatory exercises.
Evaluation
Outcome evaluation information on the value of individual sessions
and this whole series of sessions will be gathered from the participants at the end of the
program. Please refer to the attached evaluation forms.
Length
General employment sessions: up to18 hours in total.
Participation
General employment sessions: 15 to 20 participants per session.
Possible Settings
ESL classrooms, settlement agencies, employment support programs,
colleges and universities with immigrant students, and various training programs .
Participant Profile
Newcomer adults who face barriers finding employment ("Not Yet
Ready" to engage in job search), such as ESL learners, newcomers with or without work
experience and with unclear career goals, newcomers attending training programs or
newcomers in the process of changing careers.
Language Eligibility
Canadian Benchmark Levels 3 and up.
