Module 3
INDIVIDUAL CAREER PLANNING SUPPORT

This session is aimed at assisting those newcomers who need an individualized approach to career planning, due to multiple barriers to employment. It may be particularly pertinent to youth, single parents, people over 55, or those with disabilities. Furthermore, it may be a necessary way of offering support to those with beginning to intermediate languages skills, who need to access the labour market as soon as possible due to financial constraints. In this case, the help could be provided with the assistance of the ISAP workers.

General Expectations or Outcomes of this Session
The session of Individual Career Planning will include the following:

THE FIRST MEETING
This meeting will be organized as soon as the referral is received.
The purpose of this meeting is to determine career intentions, or to initiate the process of establishing a career intention should a person be unable to determine one on their own.
The second purpose is to conduct an employability assessment and to identify potential barriers to employment.
If the language level is 3 or above, the schedule for the group career sessions will be determined, or the person will be directly referred to JSW, NCP or another employment support program.
For language levels below 3, it will be determined which career plans need to be made, when the job search will take place and which employment program will best suit their needs. ISAP workers will be instrumental in assisting these newcomers both for interpretation and settlement-related purposes.
THE SECOND MEETING
The second meeting may be organized either by integrating newcomers into the regular sessions or by organizing a meeting where the career plan and employment action plans will be discussed.
This meeting will also provide an opportunity for people to discuss and finalize plans, set deadlines, develop a list of contacts (communication agencies and training institutions), informational interviews, and develop employment action plan.
THE THIRD MEETING
For some individuals, a third meeting may also be arranged if they need to engage in a lengthy certification, re-careering or licensing process. In most cases, this third meeting is unnecessary.
