YMCA International Department

Global Education for Youth

Romulo Dantas the Executive Secretary for the YMCAs World Aliiance shares his experience and the vision of YMCA in Youth empowerment at the  65th General Assembly of the United Nations, Mr. Joseph Deiss, appointed the YMCA to deliver the speech on behalf of youth-led organizations in the opening ceremony of the High Level Meeting (HLM) on Youth on July 25th 2011, in the United Nations Headquarters in New York, United States.
Romulo is the head of our International Youth Empowerment task force uniting our YMCAs in vision for Youth Empowerment.

March 5th, 2011, youth from the YMCAs of Hamilton, Flamborough, Burlington and Brantford and youth from the YMCA of Cambridge and Kitchener-Waterloo gathered at the YMCA "Shift Outlook" conference.  This conference was about understanding racism and discrimination and empowering ourselves
to make a difference, increase our knowledge and DO something with what we learned.

Participants were led by peers and by staff
through experiencing difference in  imaginary cultures and discovering how we respond to clashes in understanding.

Youth left feeling like they understood how racism gets started and how they can
take a role in stopping racism and
discrimination.

August 12, 2010 marked the beginning of the UN "Year of Youth".  This year the international department will be focused on engaging youth in our community and empowering them to make a difference!

We are currently working in collaboration with the YMCA Leader Corps and Newcomer Youth Programs to deliver presentations and activities to help youth think about their role in the local and global communities. Presentations are around diversity, racial discrimination, fair trade, poverty, environment, gender, peace and more
