Module 3
CAREER WORKSHOPS


The Group Career Planning Workshop provides career orientation to newcomers who need assistance in career planning and decision-making. The focus is on encouraging participants to examine their own career options and occupational choices to ultimately develop their optimal career plan. The objective of this workshop is to assist those who need additional support in integrating the information gathered from different sources and developing a career plan. The workshops will also explore topics such as: the role of change and technology in career planning, time management, training and skills upgrading for career development, alternatives to careers, etc.

  • Employment Training Programs

  • ESL classrooms, settlement agencies

  • Eemployment support programs

  • Colleges and universities with immigrant students

  • Training programs

Participant Profile

  • Motivated "soon-to-be job seeker"
  • Language Eligibility. Canadian Benchmark Levels 3 and up.
  • Participants are encouraged to use previously acquired information (Employment Orientation Sessions) to explore different "paths to employment".

 

General Expectations from this Session
Participants are expected to:

  • Select 2-5 occupations as their near or far future options
  • Find complete information on selected occupations
  • Research labour market trends in their selected occupations
  • Know the community and financial resources they can access
  • Develop career and personal goals and prioritize them

Specific Expectations from this Session
Participants are expected to:

  • Develop short and long term goals
  • Analyze their career goals in relation to family needs, responsibilities and obstacles
  • Know what they want to do, can do, might do and should do
  • Develop a career action plan
