Module 1 - Session 1.4

LANGUAGE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

This session focuses on the value of learning English as a Second Language. The major barrier for new Canadians in accessing occupational opportunities in Canada is not knowing either of the offical languages, particularly English in Ontario and French in Canada. Participants in teh session receive information on local ESL schools and general and specialized ESL courses. Part of the session focuses focuses on presentations from guest speaker/s from local ESL institutions, who give details on courses and services.

General Expectations or Outcomes of this Session
Participants will become familiar with:

  • Educational institutions that offer English as a Second Language (ESL) and specialized courses in ESL
  • Which courses are offered where and when
  • First-hand advise from an expert in the field

Specific Expectations from Session 1.4
Participants learn:

  • The local institutions of training for ESL in K-W
  • Available ESL courses
  • Timelines of courses
  • How and where to get information about ESL opportunities

Cross-Cultural Notes

  • For this session, it is good to invite a speaker who can give a complete overview of second language learning/testing. Local language assessment centres may have comprehensive and up-to-date information on various opportunities
  • Language learning is closest to the needs of newcomers and there are usually affordable resources within the community to address those needs
  • Child care and transportation to ESL schools can be an issue for newcomers, therefore try to collect relevant information in advance
