OCCUPATIONAL TRAINING
OPPORTUNITIES
This session focuses on familiarizing
participants with the institutions that provide
training and education leading to various occupations
in Canada. It also provides information on various
occupational professioanl organizations responsible
for accrediting credentials in Canada. Participants
will learn about the educational system in Canada
and in Ontario. They get information on continuing
education opportunities and local educational
institutions.
General
Expectations or Outcomes of this Session
Participants will become
familiar with:
- Local and provincial education systems
(schools, community colleges and universities
providing different levels of training, private
vs. public education, types of training)
- Training institutions
- Continuing Education opportunities
in the area
- Distant Education opportunities
- Education Financing: costs, loans,
federal government support, bursaries
- Importance of verifying credibility
of training institutions (for a guide to top
quality education and training, please see the
listed web sites under our "Electronic
Resources" heading.
- Accredited Institutions
Specific
Expectations from Session 1.3
Participants will know:
- Universities, colleges, schools and
other institutions in Ontario and particularly
in Kitchener-Waterloo, where occupational training
opportunities exist
- The Types of Trainings available and
the cost of training
- Where to look for more information
on relevant training opportunities
Cross-Cultural
Notes
- Participants are interested in training
for specific occupations, in training institutions,
fees, financial supports, location and time
lines which often require further research and
follow-up on the part of the curriculum deliverer
- Caution newcomers about "fly-by-night"
training institutions which may be expensive
and may yield unproductive results
- Exercises in choosing the right training
and selecting the appropriate institution are
important practices to help participants optimize
their choices
- Language, financing and age are the
three most limiting factors for newcomers. Addressing
these issues is important and various management
strategies need to be explored
- Participants may want short-term training
solutions at a lesser cost that can lead to
a reasonable job. Information of this nature
is not always easy to deliver in one short session.
Therefore, follow-up will be necessary to mutually
determine a compatible career path
