YMCA HEALTHY CHILD DEVELOPMENT

The Asset Approach – 40 Elements of Healthy Development
Developmental Assets are 40 positive experiences and qualities that all of us have the power to bring into the lives of children and youth to help them succeed. The assets provide a framework for action that encourages all individuals to make a difference, no matter who they are or that their lives are like.

Like many other organizations, YMCAs have been using Search Institute’s framework of developmental assets for several years to guide their work with children and youth. Now, through an alliance among YMCA of the USA, YMCA Canada, and Search Institute, a focused initiative is being launched with YMCA leadership to support local YMCAs to be more intentional about asset building within their own programs and in their own communities.

YMCA Character Education
The YMCA of Kitchener Waterloo has developed programs to teach children skills of compassion, tolerance, decision-making, giving and leadership. Through these interactive programs, the YMCA Core Values of Acceptance, Balance, Caring, Giving and Responsibility are taught to children ages 2.5 to 12 years.

Grow In Spirit
This program educates children about the value of caring for others through helping and giving. Through various props and activities, the program promotes and encourages positive attitudes and behaviors. The program reinforces the children’s sense of self-worth, self-esteem and confidence. Program outcomes include building resiliency and developing assets by showing children that they are valued and able to positively impact those around them.

Small World
Throughout the year YMCA International staff and volunteers visit children in YMCA and community programs presenting one hour interactive programs on topics like peace music, friendship, the environment, wants and needs, housing and food.

Under the Same Sun
This weekly program is designed for YMCA youth members, ages 6-12, to learn about global issues such as peace, immigration, hunger, poverty, citizenship and multiculturalism. The goal of Under The Same Sun is for participants to build the skills they need to become global citizens and appreciate the differences and similarities in children’s lives around the world through games, art, music, stories and discussion.
